Etymology
STEPLEWOOD (lost), Stepelwud '1261-2ForProc , Stepelwod (and Werkwod )1342 Cl, Stepulwode 1385 Pat, Stepple Woodd 1601SBL 6848B . Probably a shortened form of 'Stapleton wood'. Stapleton (infra ) adjoins Pulverbatch to the east, and had a disputed boundary with it till 1610 (VCH VIII129). The wood extended N. into Wrentnall township, where Werkwod lay.
