Etymology

The Foxall map of this area of Cheswardine has the heading “Ellerton and Sambrook townships”, and it is convenient to include here all the names shown on that map, ignoring the complications of its southern part, round Sambrook. Sambrook became an ecclesiastical parish in 1856, and Kelly's 1934 Directory says that this was formed out of the parishes of Chetwynd, Cheswardine Rural and Edgmond. The TAMaps for Ellerton and Sambrook and for Chetwynd show detached groups of fields in this area, and the Index to Tithe Survey map has lines connecting the detached portions to Ellerton. Twentieth-century maps show Sambrook as in Chetwynd.
