Etymology

This settlement is 2½ miles N.E. of Stanwardine in the Fields, and the areas of the two townships do not adjoin. Stanwardine in the Wood may have been a detached area of woodland belonging to the other settlement which evolved into a separate settlement, as detached woodland pastures often did.
