Etymology

This Sutton is S. of Market Drayton, to which parish it formerly belonged. Records of the name are sparse and may not give a full indication of affixes. The modern one, - upon Tern, appears on the 19th-cent. OS map.

The civil parish was formed out of Market Drayton in 1914, and the whole area is included in the Drayton Tithe Award. The 19th-cent. Index to Tithe Survey map shows Woodseaves as a separate township.
