Etymology

'The ridge where the young goats are grazed', v. ticcen , ofer 2 .The first el. is the gen sg. ticcnes of OE  ticcen 'a kid', which gives the voiceless stop [k]. Spellings in ch in early forms are AN representations of this voiceless stop. The generic ofer 2 is replaced in many early forms by OE  ōra1 'an elongated, flat-topped hill', v. A. Cole, 'The origin, distribution and use of the place-name element ōra and its relationship to the element ofer ', JEPNS 22 (1989–90), 27–41.
