Etymology

THE BARROWS, The Barrows 1824 O, the Benyges 16 VCH, v. beorg . It is apparent that in the south of the parish there was a group of burial mounds above R. Welland continuing those of Lyddington, Thorpe by Water, Morcott and Barrowden. One of these prehistoric burial mounds is recorded early as Estberge Hy 4Rental , 'the eastern barrow', v. ēast , beorg , cf. Far Barrows, Hither Barrows in Thorpe by Water f.ns. (a) for which parallel early forms survive.
