Etymology
Dracouncrofte(from the surn. Dragon, cf. Dragon's Hill in Preston f.ns.(a),v. croft; Reaney s.n. notes that Dragon was occasionally a nickname but usuallymetonymic for dragoner(< OFr dragonier'a standard-bearer'). He observes that'standards were often emblazoned with a dragon and were carried not only inbattle but in pageants and processions.' In the latter context, the proximity ofmedieval Stamford may well be significant.)
