Etymology

'Tóli's outlying farmstead', v. þorp . The OScand  pers.n. Tóli is a short form of names such as Þorlakr , Þorleikr and Þorlaugr , v. SPNLY 289. Forms with genitival -es - may show the influence of OScand  Tólir , also a short form of Scand  pers.ns. in Þorl -, v. SPNLY 290. Substitution of th for t is the result of AN  orthographical interchange between the symbols th and t for etymological t , v. Feilitzen § 96. For Tolethorpe Hall, Tolethorpe Mill and Tolethorpe Oaks, v. infra . The deserted medieval village site is at TF 022 104, v. MER 26.
