Etymology

Probably 'Glaðr's estate', v. tūn . The first element appears to be the Scand  pers.n. Glaðr which is otherwise found only in Norw p.ns. (v. LindBN 110–11). The p.a may reflect the settlement of Norwegians at nearby Normanton. The pagan Anglo-Saxon cemetery in the parish at SK 8946 0055 indicates the replacement of earlier English p.ns. hereabouts.
