Etymology

Turtle Bridge Acre furlong , Turtle Brigg (Close ) Furlong 1798Burghley , Turtle Bridge (Close ) Furlong 1844ib . The first element appears to be a surn. reflex of the OScand  pers.n. þorketill , v. SPNLY 309–11. This bridge across R. Welland connects Harringworth Nth with Barrowden. One Ralph Turcle is mentioned in connection with Harringworth in 1247Ass and the name of the bridge may have become associated with that of his family, v. brycg and cf. Tirtle Meare in Morcott f.ns. (b).
