Kingstanding Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Wychwood or Whichwood

Etymology

Kingstanding Fm: cf. King 's Standing 1857EnclA . This name has been noted in Sx, Wa, Nth and Nt, and there are other examples in Ewelme (127) and on the 1″ map about a mile west of Moulsford in Berks. The second element is standing NED vbl. sb. 4c, 'a hunter's station or stand from which to shoot game': cf. the first quotation (c. 1400) “Þenne shulde þe maister of þe game…meete þe kynge and brynge hym to his stondynge and telle hym what game is withinne þe sette.” The reference to royal hunting is, of course, particularly appropriate near Wychwood Forest. v. Introduction xxvii.
