Etymology

Christmas Common. Cf. Christmas Coppice 1617Prince Charles , t. Jas 1Survey , a village called Christmas in the liberty of Greenfield , Christmas Green early 18th ParColl. A Christmas Coppice might well have been one where holly trees grew. The association of holly with Christmas is an ancient one, and Christmas-tree is given in EDD as a dialect term for holly.
