Etymology

'The ford of *Sciell (a ) or his people.' The same name occurs twice in Devonshire, v. PN D 503 and DEPN. There was a place called Sullingwrthe 1278–9 RH (under Lewknor), c. 1290MertR , Schyllyngewurthe 1310 ChCh, Sullyngworthe 1311MertR , Schillyngwurthe 1349 ChCh, which is difficult to locate, but may have been in the nearby parish of Chalgrove. The name may survive in the Solinger Field , which occurs in the Chalgrove Tithe Award. The forms from ChCh occur, however, under Wallingford. Whatever the precise location of the place, the name has worþ as second element, and the same first element as Shillingford. scillinges broc in BCS 505, in the bounds of Little Wittenham (Berks), is probably named from the same man.
