Etymology

Stonesfield Ford (6″) is probably Stontesford 1278–9 RH, Stuntesforde 1298 Eynsh, Stuntesford 1300 Wych, Stuntesfoord 1608–9Survey , Stonesford 1804EnclA . The first element is the personal name *Stunt , which appears in the name of the parish. A Stontesham is also mentioned in the 1278–9 reference, and there is a Stuntescumb '1273–4 RH and a Stuntesdon 1246 Ch, v. hamm , cumb , dūn .
