Etymology

'Open land where cattle graze,' v. hrȳðer , feld . Greys , like Peppard (infra 79–80) is an example of a feudal addition to a place- name replacing the name itself in common speech. The family of Grey first appears in connection with this place in the early 13th century. No reference to the Murdac family has been noted after the late 12th century.
