Etymology

Hayden Fm takes name from Heydon 1274 Ipm, Cl, 1355 Ipm, Haydon (parke )1450 Cl, the Hydend 1476, Hidden House Farm 1759, Haden House Farm 1774, Hayden House 1786, Hiding House 1797 Davis, Highdown Farm 1822 O.S., Hiden House Farm c. 1840TA , Hayden Farm 1900. Probably 'hay hill,' OE  hēg, dūn . Some of the later forms are obviously connected with the tradition mentioned by P. Briers, History of Nuffield 91, that the name commemorates an occasion on which a king lay hiding in the farmhouse.
