Vent Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Holton

Historical Forms

  • la Vente 1278–9 RH
  • The Vent 1630 Bodl

Etymology

Vent Fm (6″) takes name from la Vente 1278–9 RH, The Vent 1630Bodl . This is obviously the same name as la Vente (1355) PN Bk 259, which was noted in Boarstall only about four miles from here.Possibly it should also be compared with Vent Field in the Enclosure Award for the nearby village of Beckley, which according to the Award was crossed by a public drain. The word vent is not recorded in any sense till the 15th century. The general meanings are 'opening' or 'outlet,' and it may be used here of some kind of drain.
