Etymology

Wheatley Bridge is so named 1797 Davis. An earlier name for a bridge in this region, and very possibly identical with this one, is (on ) herpaþ ford 956 (contemporary) BCS 945, (pons de ) Harpesford 1228–9ForProc , 1278–9 RH, 1285Ass , (pons de ) Harpeford 1240–1, 1285 (freq )Ass , (pontem de ) Harpisford 1278–9 RH, Harpesfordebrugge 1285Ass , Herfordbrugg '1390 St John. The name is identical with Harford and Harpford PN D 405, 590, 'ford over which a main road (literally an 'army path') leads.' The herepað is mentioned again in KCD 1296, in Great Haseley. v. Introduction xxviii.
