Etymology

Probably 'reed cottage,' i.e. with a roof thatched with reeds, v. hrēod , cot(e); but the early appearance of forms with Rat -, Rad - indicates confusion with rēad , 'red,' and this may have been the original first element. Rocote 1086 DB may refer to this place.
