Dunford Copse (6″) takes name from Derneford ? 1272 (c. 1280) S: cf. Dunforde meade 1656Bodl , Dunford Coppice and Meadow c. 1840TA . 'Hidden ford,' v. d(i)erne. The same name occurs again rather less than six miles away, v. Lower and Upper Dornford Fm in Wootton 293. Places called darneforde and darnecrofte are mentioned 1490Bodl , probably with reference to this place.
