Etymology

Ilbury Fm takes name from Galoberie 1086 DB, Wolebire , Welebire , Wellebir '1192, 4, 6et seq P, Jellebire 1205 Cur, Jelebiri 1208 OblR, Elebere 1220 Fees, Yeleberi , Ielebur '1242–3 Fees, Ielebir '1235 FF, Yholebur 1246 Ch, Galburghyre c. 1270 (c. 1450) Godstow (p), Youleburie 1278–9 RH, Iollebury 1289 FF, Yelebyre 1285Ass , Yol (u )ghbury 1328, 9 Ch, Yoleghbury 1349 Ipm, Elbury early 18th ParColl. 'Yellow fort,' OE  geolu burh . The burh of the second element is obviously the nearby prehistoric camp, and the Vicar informs us that this is situated at the end of a ridge which yields markedly yellow ironstone. Cf. Iron Down (394), about a mile away.
