Etymology

Caswell Ho etc. take name from Cauereswell '1166 P, Cressewell '1182et seq P, Kerswelle 1223–8 Eynsh, Charswell 1278–9 RH, Karsewell '1297 CornAccet freq with variant spellings Carsewell (e ), Karsewell to 1517 D Inc, Karswelle 1342 Eynshet passim with variant spellings Carswell (e ) to 1387 Cl, Craswelle 1384 Eynsh. If the earliest form is to be trusted, the first element is the personal name, probably *Cāfhere , found in Caversfield 204, and in Caversham Berks. All the other forms point clearly to the etymology 'cress-stream,' v. cærse , w(i)elle, which is a common stream-name in the county (supra 13), and might have been substituted for that reason.
