Etymology

'Valley,' v. cumb . It was evidently known as 'Long Combe' in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. Mr C. S. Emden informs us that the site of the village was moved to where it now is on the hill-side from a position down in the river-valley, half a mile away, about 1350.
