Etymology
'tūnon a clif.' No reference has been found to a family named Hampden . There is, however, a group of names in this region ending in -hampton —Chislehampton, Brookhampton and Stadhampton— and it is possible that the same process of analogy which added -ton to the name of Stadhampton may have given the suffix to Clifton Hampden.
