Etymology

The first element is identical with that of Caversham in Berks.Ekwall (DEPN) suggests a personal name connected with OE  cāf , 'bold, active,' a similar name being the first element of Cavendish and Cavenham Sf. In the O and Berks names we have a derivative, perhaps *Cāfhere , which occurs elsewhere in the county in minor names. Second element feld.
