Historical Forms

  • Samebrugg 1278–9 RH

Etymology

Shambridge Wood (6″) takes name from Samebrugg 1278–9 RH.'Sandy ridge,' v. sand , hrycg . The second element is not likely to be 'bridge' as there is no river. The appearance of a 'b' in this position is an easily paralleled development, which has taken place also in Elmbridge (PN Wo 290).
