Etymology

Slate Mill (6″) is Sclattemylle 1482, 1509, 16, 17, Sclatemylle , Sclattmylle 1521, Sclat myll 1531, Slate myll 1595, Slatt mylne 1601, Slatt mill 1628, 33, Slatmill 1633. These forms are from deeds in the possession of Dr T. Loveday. The modern name gives the correct etymology: Dr Loveday informs us that the slate roof of the building has only recently been removed.
