Etymology

Langney (lost) is Langeneia 1141 OxonChet passim with variant spellings Langeneyt ', Langeney (a ), Langeneit to 1480 Frid, Langneiam 1143–7 OxonCh, Langneya c. 1190–1200 (c. 1425) Frid, 1197–1201 (13th) Os, Lagneia c. 1200–10 (c. 1425) Frid. 'Long island,' v. (ī)eg.Some forms have eyt as suffix. Salter (MedOx 13) says that “the original Binsey was no doubt the small island in the centre of which is the church, and Langney would be the rest of what is now called Binsey.”
