Etymology

'*Ceomma 's island,' v. (ī)eg. The personal name is a hypocoristic form of such names as Cēolmǣr , Cēolmund , with assimilation of -l - to -m -: it is found also in the name of a brook at Chimney—Ceomina laca 1005 (late 12th) Eynsh and Ceoman lace 1069 OSFacs—and in Ceomman bricg KCD 652 and Ceomman treow BCS 820 in other counties.

The 1797 form is identical with a 19th-century form of the word chimney .
