Etymology

Grimesmoor is Grymesmore 1335For , Grimes Moor 1663 WoodsRept, v. mor . The first element is the personal name Grim from ON  Grimr . In 1280 (Ass ) we have mention of Grymesbrig inter Wodeburgh et Epperston . This must have been the earlier name of Wash Bridge (supra 162) over Dover Beck about half a mile from Grimesmoor. The same man gave name to the bridge and to the marshy land near it.
