Etymology

It is impossible to be sure with regard to this name. Ekwall hazards the suggestion that it is from OE  Wīges -tūn from the personal name Wig but notes that the DB form makes it rather unlikely. Equally hazardous is the suggestion that like Wissington (Sf), it goes back to OE  Wiswyþetun (BCS 1289). More probable perhaps is derivation from OE  wisce , 'damp meadow'; cf. the forms for Wisley (PN Sr 155) which is certainly a compound of wisce and already has Wise - in DB. But the name may equally well contain the personal name Wisa found in the compound Godric Wisesuna (11th Dugd vi, 262). For in le clay , v. supra 24.
