Etymology

Professor Ekwall suggests an OE word as the first element, corresponding to Dan  krat , 'brushwood,' Norw  krat , 'rubbish,' as suggested by Skeat for Cratfield (PN Sf 26). He notes, however, the difficulty of the somewhat persistent medial e .Professor Bruce Dickins suggests the personal name Crǣta with trisyllabic shortening in the compound Crǣtanlēage . v. lundr .
