Etymology

This is a difficult name and it is impossible to be sure about either the first or the second element in it. Ekwall (DEPN) conjectures that the first element may be an OE  tīefrere , 'painter,' possibly used with the sense 'sorcerer' developed in the German cognate zauberer . He suggests that the second element shows confusion between OE  holt, 'wood' and (ge)heald, 'hold, shelter.'
