Harlow Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Sutton in Ashfield

Etymology

Harlow Wood. Cf. Horlow Clyf t. Ed 3Map , Hurloclifes c. 1450ForBk , Hurelocliffe 1602 ib., Mansfield Harlowes 1650ParlSurv , Harlow Wood c. 1825 O.S. The inconsistent early forms make it difficult to interpret this name satisfactorily.Professor Ekwall suggests that it may be for hord -hlāw , 'treasure- hill,' with o lengthened before rd —hence the u -spellings.Professor Bruce Dickins would derive the name from OE  hor (h )- hlāw , 'dirty hill.' v. hlaw .
