Etymology

In spite of the o in the DB form, this name may possibly go back to OE  scearn lēage , 'dung wood or clearing,' the initial [sk] being due to Scandinavian influence, v. Introd. xxiii. South to distinguish from North Scarle in Lincolnshire.
