Etymology
Brough [bruf] is Burgh 1525 Wake, Bruff 1677 Thoroton, 1775 C, Brugh 1732 Horsley, 1789 Camden (Gough). This is the site of the Romano-British station Crococalanum , and Brough is clearly the OE burh used to denote an ancient fortification. For the modern pronunciation cf. Brough (We, Yorks).
