Etymology

There is a good deal of evidence for a personal name element Sceaft in OE. We may note the compounds Sce (a )fthere (Widsith and BCS 77), Sceftwine (ib. 111), the uncompounded Sceaft which would seem to be found in Sceafteshangra (ib. 629), a derivative Sceaftel in Sceaftlesora (ib. 982) and a derivative Sceaften in Shaftesbury (Ekwall, Studies , 12). The element weorð may in the first instance have been compounded with OE  Sceaft (a ). Later this may have been Scandinavianised to Skaft -, or we may have actual substitution of the OScand  personal name Skapti , Skafti .
