Etymology

Probably 'Hrempi 's tun,' with the same personal name which is found in Hrempingwiic in Kent (BCS 289). Ekwall (DEPN) calls attention to possible OGer  cognates Rampo , Hremfing (Förstemann PN 1243–4). Karlström (176), followed by Wallenberg (KPN 81) and Ekwall (op. cit .), associates the name with the base of OE  (ge )hrumpen , 'wrinkled.'
