Etymology

Mapperley is Mapurley barns 1496AD , Mapperley , Maperley Meadow 1609LRMB , Mapperley in the parish of Basford 1761Recov and is of manorial origin. Its history is given by Thoroton (235) who states that certain assarts in Basford were acquired by Thomas Mapurley “a considerable man in Nottinghamshire” in the reign of Richard II and that his name became attached to the closes and buildings which afterwards appeared upon the site. For this Thomas cf. Thomas de Mapurlye (1381 AD vi), Thomas de Mapurley de Notyngham (1393Ass ) and Thomas Maperley of Nottingham (HMC Var vii). Presumably his family came from Mapperley (Db).
