Etymology

Willoughby is Wilgebi 1086 DB, Wilgheby 1241, 1290FF , Wyluby juxta Northwell 1287Ass , Wylueby ib., Willeughby 1302 FA, Wylughby juxta Northwell 1325, 1355Ass , Welughby 1428 FA. 'by by the willows,' v. Introd. xvi and cf. Willoughby (PN Wa 148–9). There was a Wylughbusk in Norwell (1335Ass ), i.e. 'willow bush or clump.'
