Etymology

'The ham of the people of Cola ,' v. ing . The two villages are continuous and form one long street. In 1269 (Ebor) there is an interesting reference to the churches of Northeby and Sutheby in Collingham. These are to be interpreted as norðr í and suðr í , i.e. north and south in the village of Collingham. Cf. IPN 92 for similar phrases in other parts of the Danelaw.
