Littleborough Bridge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Littleborough

Historical Forms

  • Staffordebrig' 1330 Ass
  • Stafford Bridge 1614 CoRec

Etymology

Littleborough Bridge (6″) would seem to be the Staffordebrig ' of 1330Ass , Stafford Bridge 1614 CoRec. stanford , 'stone ford,' is unlikely here and we probably have a repetition of the well- known Stafford (St), going back to OE  stæþ -ford , 'ford by the stæþ or landing-place.'
