Etymology

This name is to be associated with the place of the same name in the North Riding (PN NRY 200). Both alike contain an OE  element Cylfing - which may be a reduction of OE  Cynelāfing - or a derivative of Cylfa , a pet form of OE  Cynelāf , 'Cylfa 's or Cynelāf 's farm,' v. tun . The topography forbids our taking the name as a parallel to Kilton (So), cf. PN D Vol. 2, ix.
