Collingthwaite is Colyngthweyt 1227Welbeck , Colyngthweyth 1280Ass , Colinthuayt t. Ed 1Welbeck , Colingthweyt 1281FF , 1291 Ch, Collyngwath (e )1535 VE, 1539MinAcct , Colewhayte ib., Collingthwatt 1540 LP, Collingworth al. Collyngethwayte 1552 Pat. This place-name must be connected with the “bovate of land que Colling tenet ” (1159–81 Holtzmann), “que fuit Collinges ” (1181–5 ib.). Hence 'Colling 's clearing or paddock,' v. þveit .
