Etymology

Halloughton Dumble is so named c. 1825 (O.S.). v. infra 279.It is no doubt identical in site with Halton dale 1556EcclComm , Hawtondal 1666 ib. v. dæl , dalr . It appears as Niwatunes-broc , Niwantunes-broc in the boundaries of Southwell and Fiskerton in BCS 1029. In post-Conquest times there is no sign of any place called Newton in the neighbourhood of this brook.
