Etymology

Marlock Ho is Mardelok , Mardelak 1290 Abbr, Marlacke bridge , Marlockwonge t. Hy 8Ct , Marblacke 1609LRMB , Marlock 1775 C. There is little to go upon here. The second element is probably lacu , 'small stream' rather than loc , 'enclosure.' The first element may be OE  mearð , 'marten, weasel,' hence perhaps 'marten-stream.' Cf. Mardleybury (PN Herts 143).
