Big Stainers

Early-attested site in the Parish of Greasley

Etymology

Big Stainers (6″). In 1550 (Pat) we have mention of closes and pastures called Great Stonawe , Lytle Stonawe and woods called Stemer (sic), all in Greasley. In 1247 (FF ) we have mention of a Steynhawe in the same parish. The last is clearly a compound of steinn and hagi . Stonawe is probably an anglicised form of the same name. Stemer may be an error for Steiner , a colloquial descendant of Steynhawe .
