Etymology

“There are no flints in the neighbourhood” (H.H.S.), and we must abandon any attempt at a topographical explanation of the first element. The personal name Flint is, however, found in DB (cf. Feilitzen s. n .) and it is possible therefore that there was an OE  personal name Flinta in a weak form which may be the first element in Flintham, hence 'Flinta 's ham.' The name Flinthardus is on record in Suffolk from the 12th century (t. Hy 2 DuLa Miscellaneous Books f. 29) but this is probably a late nickname rather than an early Germanic name in -heard .
