Etymology

As Finningley lies in a dead level country on the edge of the Carr area, it is probable that the name is from fenningaleah , meaning 'clearing of the fen-dwellers,' v. ing , leah , fenn , the vowel being early raised to i before the following nasal. Cf. Vinnetrow (PN Sx 75).
