Historical Forms

  • Chepynghyll t.Hy8 MinAcct
  • Shippen Hill 1611 Wills
  • Sheponhill 1619 ib

Etymology

Shipton-hill (6″) is Chepynghyll t. Hy 8MinAcct , Shippen Hill 1611 Wills, Sheponhill 1619 ib. If the first identification is correct the hill was originally called 'market-hill' (v. cieping ), presumably from some old fair, and later corrupted to shippen , as if from OE  scipen , 'cowshed,' dial. shippon .
